Disengaged from the course of processes, the European notion of happiness often attaches itself to something concluded. Another possibility can be found in the successful beginning. The beginning is the arrival in happiness. This is how Shitao sees it, the Chinese painter, whose words in the book are put into the mouth of another painter, Bada Shanren. Considered at length so to arise in only one assured gesture, the first stroke comprises the entire drawing.
