During a research stay in London in Dezember 2015 we discovered, that there is a serious of Eight Views of Shitao existing in the Asian collection of the British Museum: “Eight views of the south". By appointment in the archive we were able to view them, whereas two of them were lend to other exhibitions.
The album was purchased by the BM in 1965 from Brenda Seligman, an important collector. It was collected by Zhou Lianggong (1612-72), a major 17thC patron and Qing official (later done for corruption). There’s some question about the authenticity of the paintings.
In talking with Mary Ginsberg, in charge of the collection, she was introducing to us the writings of Alfreda Murck, describing the Eight Views in her book „The subtle Art of Dissent“.
